Take-Two Interactive's 2nd Quarter Results - Max Payne 3 Delay Announcement Tuesday, 8 June, 2010 at 21:32 PST | Jon | Print News Three big pieces of information came out of today's investor call with Take-Two Interactive ? Red Dead Redemption is a huge success, the multiplatform release of Episodes From Liberty City has helped turn around the company's 2nd quarter and Max Payne 3 has been delayed until at least the end of the year.
In just 3 weeks, RDR has already sold over 5 million copies, which puts it over a million units ahead of the number that analysts had estimated would be required for Take-Two to break even. Even with the results from this quarter not factoring in the success of RDR, the company still managed to outperform expectations with stronger-than-expected sales from Bioshock 2, Episode from Liberty City and Major League Baseball 2K10. Somewhat buried in this story was another huge number for Take-Two. GTA IV has now hit a total of 17 million units sold worldwide. Definitely a strong indicator of continued success for their biggest brand!
"Our better than expected second quarter results reflect the solid performance of our triple-A titles and continued strength of our catalog business," said Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two.
Details on the Max Payne 3 delay were not provided. We know that the release won't come until at least the new fiscal year in November, but it was not confirmed if the title could even be pushed all the way into 2011. Other Take-Two titles, L.A. Noire, Civilization V and Mafia II, remain on track for their releases later this year.

The Base Jumping Extreme Film Festival Contest Tuesday, 27 April, 2010 at 21:37 PST | Jon | Print News Rockstar has announced their first video contest in a new series for the recently released Episodes from Liberty City.
Strap on a parachute in The Ballad of Gay Tony and use the PC version's in-game suite of video editing tools to make the most creative contest entry clip you can. A balls-out short action film? A base jumping commercial? An aerial music video? A creative montage of parachute stunts? We know you'll amaze and surprise us as always.
The possibilities are endless. Just make sure it's at or under 5 minutes in length, and somehow, someway ? parachuting or base jumping features prominently.

Red Dead Redemption Reviews [ 4 Comments ] Wednesday, 19 May, 2010 at 19:07 PST | Jon | Print News Red Dead Redemption has been out for a couple of days now, but there may be some of you who are still on the fence about making the purchase. If you haven't checked out all of the major reviews, you may get that extra push from the IGN video review or by reading some of the excerpts from the other reviews below.
Red Dead Redemption at IGN.com IGN Score: 9.7 out of 10
Red Dead Redemption is a must-play game. Rockstar has taken the Western to new heights and created one of the deepest, most fun, and most gorgeous games around. You can expect the occasional bug or visual hiccup, but you can also expect a fantastic game that offers the Western experience we've all been waiting for. Red Dead Redemption is a complete game in every sense -- both the single player and multiplayer modes are excellent -- and still manages to offer an attention to detail you rarely see from a game of this scope.

Gamespy Score: 5 out of 5 stars
The fact of the matter is, this is a game that you really need to play (hell, just watching someone play might be enough) to appreciate. With Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar succeeds in creating one of the most impressive open worlds I've ever seen in a game, and it's telling that -- even after playing for over 30 hours -- all I want to do is get back on my horse and gallop back into the wilderness.

G4/TV Score: 5 out of 5 stars
Red Dead Redemption sets the bar for all future genre efforts and it gives players the chance to participate in their very own Spaghetti Western that includes a wild cast of characters, epic wild west showdowns, a score that would make Ennio Morricone proud, an absurdly expansive frontier to explore, and a wonderfully enjoyable multiplayer experience that will have players forming posses and battling bandits for some time. It?s going to take a lot to top this one. Even if you?re not a fan of Westerns, there?s still plenty here to enjoy. Red Dead Redemption is one of 2010?s best games.

1UP Score: A
Red Dead is a great game to climb into and just live for a while, and that's everything I wanted. In fact, I'm actually feeling pretty annoyed that I'm not wandering around in there right now. Stupid videogame reviews. There are herds to save, outlaws to kneecap, frontier ladies to rescue, random strangers to tie up and drop off a cliff for no reason, and sunsets that need riding off into.

GamePro Score: 5 out of 5 stars
Although this is said of almost every single new Rockstar product, Red Dead Redemption is arguably their best effort to date, if only because it distills all of the lessons they've learned from their previous titles into an engaging, expansive, and enthralling world. But the best part of Rockstar's open-world oater is its honest and open appreciation for the iconic Western genre; Its Wild West setting is memorable and stays true to established genre lore while still managing to add its own wrinkles and twists. It's one of the most appealing game worlds I've experienced in my recent memory, and it holds enough thrills to keep you playing from the very first bullet to long after the ride off into the sunset.

Game Informer Score: 9.75
To succeed where other Western games have failed, Red Dead Redemption deftly recreates a sandbox playground of a tumultuous historical period swept away by technological progress. The game perfectly captures the expansiveness of frontier life and the gritty gunplay of spaghetti westerns, rightfully earning its place alongside the great Western films and the best Rockstar games.

Eurogamer Score: 8 out of 10
The result is an exceptional Rockstar game, one that successfully re-clothes the Grand Theft Auto framework in an exciting, distinct and expertly realised scenario. But just how satisfying the formula remains after the exuberant destructiveness of Red Faction: Guerrilla, or the joyful, ad-hoc player stories born in the freedom of Just Cause 2's playpen, is increasingly under scrutiny. And even within Rockstar's own canon, there is little here for that smart young journalist to inform Liberty City about that it didn't already know. A magnificent eight, then.

Rockstar Games and Comic Con NYC Sunday, 10 October, 2010 at 22:33 PST | Jon | Print News
This weekend brought this year's Comic Con convention to New York City. Although New York's annual gathering is not quite as famous as its San Diego counterpart, there were still days worth of things to visit, experience and play. Video games are not as large of a component in the New York convention, but there were at least a few interesting demos for anyone who loves gaming. Beyond the games, there were many authors, artists and celebrities greeting and talking with the visitors.
Rockstar Games may not have had any new games at this year's show, but that didn't stop them from having one of the larges booths at this year's show. The Rockstar presence this year was devoted entirely to a single new offering ? The Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare pack. Unfortunately, photography was not allowed within their walled-off booth, but there were plenty of demo stands available, allowing visitors to play through a demo of the upcoming DLC.
The demo puts John Marston in the middle of a graveyard equipped with a variety of weapons and tasked with burning 5 exposed coffins and taking on the crowds of zombies rising from the ground. Slaughtering the undead with torches and Marston's various guns adds a new and interesting dimension to the Red Dead Redemption experience. The Blunderbuss, in particular, definitely fits the exciting and over-the-top experience that Rockstar is clearly aiming to bring to RDR. Seeing zombies explode in a splash of blood is quite a sight to see!
Rockstar also one-upped nearly every other company at the show with their hand-outs and the fan gear being offered for free. Red Dead Redemption posters, stickers, t-shirts and playing cards were available for fans who were willing to put in a small amount of effort to obtain them. Various Rockstar employees were on hand to help out with the demos, greet fans and hand out their various offerings. With Rockstar giving this much attention to a simple DLC pack, we can only imagine what they will pull out for their upcoming games and future GTA games. For various pictures from around the convention, check out the images below.

Where is GTA V? Sunday, 29 August, 2010 at 9:04 PST | Jon | Print News Rockstar games is continuing to see interest in it's many projects, but the biggest question of the year has continued to go unanswered...
Where is Grand Theft Auto V?
It's a question that all sorts of groups are asking, but nobody seems able to answer. The one thing we do know is that it takes a tremendous amount of effort to develop a Grand Theft Auto game, and Rockstar already has it's resources stretched thin on other projects. With Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire and Agent, all currently in development, it's difficult to see where Rockstar could find time to develop a new GTA title. Rockstar San Diego, who recently completed Red Dead Redemption, might be able to reasonably move on with a project like this. Major GTA games have typically been handled by the Rockstar North development house, but with their release of Agent looking further and further away, it just might make the most sense to pass a new GTA project on to Rockstar San Diego. After the way they proved themselves with Red Dead Redemption, why not give them a crack at it?
In the end, we have no details and this is all just speculation. We're even seeing industry analysts jumping into this game with strange assumptions that seem to have nothing backing them up. As mentioned at the above link, we've already seen how wrong these predictions can be after many assumed that GTA V would be showcased at this year's E3. That, of course, proved entirely wrong and we actually ended up seeing almost no presence from Rockstar at that show.
As always, drop us a comment if you think you've got things figured out. Since this is all just a guessing game, your's is as good as any other. Who knows... as GTA fans, we might actually be able to figure out more than these supposed industry insiders.
GameFocus Reviews EFLC Thursday, 15 April, 2010 at 21:59 PST | Wally | Print News GameFocus has reviewed Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City. They have awarded the game with a 9.0/10.
In terms of gameplay, let?s just say that even though Gay Tony?s mandatory missions are much more varied and per consequent, a tad more interesting to play compared to Lost & Damned, it remains Grand Theft Auto. In my opinion, Gay Tony is the episode that has the extreme, high-volatile action that truly defines a GTA game. Not that Lost & Damned lacks punch but personally I thought Gay Tony was way more interesting and captivating, mostly due in part to the nightlife/club storyline setting.

Update: Here are more reviews for the game:

'Hot Coffee' settlement payouts finally in the mail Tuesday, 30 March, 2010 at 21:42 PST | Jon | Print News Kotaku is reporting that checks are finally in the mail for everyone who was "harmed" by the San Andreas "Hot Coffee" scandal from nearly five years ago. Take-Two Interactive, publisher of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, is mailing out payments of between $5 and $35 for claims that were filed by May 16, 2008. These payouts come as Take-Two's primary effort to "voluntarily fulfill all properly-submitted claims."
So, have we finally seen the end of this story after 5 years? Is a payment of $5 really supposed to "help" people who were "victimized" while obviously trying to access that content in the first place? If you ask me, these people should count themselves lucky to get anything.

GTA Episodes from Liberty City Delayed by Two Weeks Thursday, 18 March, 2010 at 14:27 PST | Jon | Print News Rockstar has just announced that the worldwide release of Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City has been delayed by two weeks. The new release dates will be April 13th in North America and April 16th in Europe. The delay is the result of edits to "some of the in-game Liberty City radio station, television, and internet content" that were requested for the PS3 version. Though these edits do not include the PC version, both releases are being pushed back to ensure a fair, simultaneous release.
This is sure to come as a disappointment to many GTA fans, but 2 weeks is a very minor delay compared to what we've already waited through. I'm content to wait patiently, but if you want to give Rockstar a piece of your mind, follow the link below and be sure to leave a comment. They'd probably love some supportive comments to help balance things out, though.

Rockstar Announces 10th Anniversary Edition of GTA III for Mobile Devices & Limited Edition Action Figure Thursday, 13 October, 2011 at 14:02 PST | Adriaan | Print News
This month, October 22nd to be exact, marks the 10 year anniversary of the release of Grand Theft Auto III. For most who had played the game around then will remember how truly special and different this game was - whether it was the amazing story missions such as Bomb da Base, managing to fly the Dodo, or just cruising the map listening to the in-game radio, which featured Lazlow's Chatterbox and great tracks such as "Rush Rush".
To mark the occasion, Rockstar today announced that the original game will be releasing this Fall (most likely on or around October 22nd) on several mobile devices. The current line-up of devices is listed below, though more support for other devices are said to be announced later on by the company.
Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S
Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2
Additionally, the company is releasing a limited edition action figure of Claude, the game's main character. Those who are old school enough will find it interesting that Rockstar is actually mentioning the name of the character, as he officially never had a name and this topic was once part of a big debate.
The figure, shown above, can be bought for $149 from Rockstar Warehouse. Those in limited territories stand the chance to win one as well in a special sweepstakes.
Take-Two Stock Slides Over Concerns About a New GTA Wednesday, 9 June, 2010 at 20:11 PST | Jon | Print News Yesterday's earnings announcement from Take-Two may have been good news for the company, but it looks like they've already lost any reason to celebrate. Less than a day after the announcement, the company saw it's stocks slide more than 7% over the course of the day. This news, however, may actually help us get a Grand Theft Auto V sooner than many of us expected. The downturn came as a result of increasing uncertainty from investors who are looking for news about the publisher's biggest brand.
"There is a hesitation to own the stock without more information about GTA," said Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey. "If we don't hear anything in the next few months, then doubts start to creep in."
The stock will surely rebound in the coming days, but you can bet that this news means Rockstar will face more demands to release some details on a new GTA game. It's one thing for the fans to be clamoring for a new release, but you've really got to take it seriously when your publisher starts to feel the pressure and turns their sights to you.

Rockstar Games Backs Away from E3 Tuesday, 1 June, 2010 at 23:19 PST | Jon | Print News
It seems that we won't be getting any big news out of Rockstar at E3 this year, according to a recent news item from computerandvideogames.com. Rumors of a GTA V and other big announcements about current Rockstar projects are starting to pick up, but the company has kept tight lips about everything beyond the recent rollout of Red Dead Redemption. It seems that they will hold off until future events or press invitations to their corporate offices.
A company spokesperson told CVG that instead it will be focusing on scheduling its own dedicated press rounds at its headquarters in the coming weeks.
"In the end, we feel we simply don't have enough time to show as much as we would like in the time available," a spokesperson said. Rockstar was planning to show Max Payne 3 and LA Noire at the show.
